Gorilla Glue - Eewww!
|
Keep that glue in the cupboard!
As this tale demonstrates, the idea of eating Gorilla Glue may sound funny, but the result is no laughing matter.
Tucker, an eight-month-old Labradoodle, was discovered with a jar of the glue one day. It was uncertain as to whether he had consumed any, and, as he seemed to be in good spirits, it was decided to watchfully wait to see if he had any side effects. Over the next 12 days, Tucker seemed OK, but he vomited periodically, particularly after eating kibbled dog food. Reasoning that the glue might have irritated his stomach lining, the owner tried him on a bland home cooked diet of chicken and rice. He seemed to do pretty well with this food, but his usual bouncy spirit noticeably declined, and she sought us for further diagnosis.
Xrays revealed the problem – his stomach was full of material - although at the time we didn’t know the nature of it. We scheduled an exploratory surgery.
At surgery, the problem was immediately obvious. His stomach was mildly swollen and VERY firm. It required a large incision in the stomach wall to reveal and remove a dark brown object of remarkable consistency: sort of like very firm Styrofoam, about 6 inches in diameter!
The surgery was curative. Once relieved of this load, Tucker’s appetite – and attitude – rebounded remarkably. All’s well that end’s well. But it is an object lesson.
